The Summer term has begun in earnest. We have had some days of beautiful weather and the children have been outside much more often which is always great to see. This week has also seen the start of this term's class trips. Look out on the individual class blogs for more details and photographs.
Year 6 are two weeks into their swimming lessons which are being held at the pool  at Mount  Kelly. We look forward to them all making fantastic progress and getting more of them confident in the water ready for the long, hot summer!
Speaking of summer, when the weather is hot, would you please ensure that your child comes to school with appropriate sun protection (sun lotion and something to protect their head.) 
An e mail has gone to all parents about Sport's Day- more details will follow about your child's team colours etc. Fingers crossed for similar weather to the Jubilee picnic1
The attendance award this week goes to Year 4 with 94.7%- well done (again).
Finally, I am delighted to share photographs of the winners from the Gunnislake art exhibition which was held over half term. Congratulations to Lilly (Reception), Saffron (Year 3), Arthur (Year 6) , Mikey (Year 4) and Isabella (Year 2). Well done to all of the children who exhibited.

We have, unbelievably, reached the end of another half term and the Jubilee family picnic was such a lovely way to end it! Thank you to all families who were able to attend- weren't we so very lucky with the weather!
Special thanks to Mrs Peters for counting all the money that has come into school during the past couple of weeks- that was a pretty mammoth task! Also, to Miss Owen who ordered the delicious doughnuts and collected them from Plymouth this morning for us- I know that they were really appreciated by everyone who ordered them.
Those of you who helped your children to create beautiful crowns also deserve thanks. I hope that the winners from each group enjoy reading their 'There Once is a Queen' book.
It was so lovely to see everyone enjoying the sunshine and one another's company.
I know that you will want me to thank Calstock Parish Council on your behalf for their generous donation of the special Jubilee mugs. I hope that these will serve as reminder of the lovely day and also the amazing reign of our Queen.


Year 6 were the highest attendance class this week with 97.5%. I am sure that they will enjoy some extra 'down time' as a reward after half term.

Many of the pupils of Gunnislake and Delaware have produced some lovely Jubilee artwork for the Gunnislake Jubilee Art Exhibition. It can be seen on Friday 3rd to Saturday 4th June from 10am to 5pm in St. Ann's Church. Entry is £2 for adults with children under 16 being free. I hope as many of you as possible can visit.

Thank you to all of the brilliant staff who make Gunnislake and Delaware such special places- you work so hard for the children to give them the best learning experiences possible- enjoy your break.

It only remains for me to also wish you a safe and happy half term and a memorable Jubilee long weekend!

Another busy week at both bases with Gunnislake facing our first Ofsted inspection for four years. As soon as I am able to let you know the outcome I will.
Last Saturday, some of our pupils accompanied our brilliant giant bird - 'Feathers' to Callington's Mayest. It was a beautiful sunny day and both Gunnislake and Delaware were represented wonderfully. A big thank you to Mr and Mrs Symons for helping to transport our giant to Callington and to Mrs Johnson for helping to add the finishing touches to 'Feathers'.
I am looking forward to seeing as many of you as possible at the Jubilee Picnic this Friday- fingers crossed that the weather will be kind to us. Gates will be open just before 12.15pm and you can stay as long as you would like to. If you are leaving before the end of school then please remember to sign your child/ren out with their class teachers. We will look after any pupils whose parents are unable to attend and release them at 3.00pm. Please collect them from the playground as usual.

What a busy start to this half term and we are already almost at the end of it!

Karate Reading:

I am delighted to tell you that some of the pupils have already reached their 'black belts' in Karate Reading. The challenge, once they have reached this, is to continue the regular reading at home which, we know, really helps in all aspects of school.

Attendance:

For the first two weeks of this half term the Year 4 class were the winners of the attendance award. They were pipped to the post this week by Year 2 and Year 6, who both had 100% attendance!

SATs:

The Year 6's have been working really hard all week, sitting their end of Key Stage Assessments. It was great to start each day with our communal breakfast and get together and I think that this really did put them in the best frame of mind going into the tests. Huge thanks go to Miss Hambly and Miss Brown for working so hard to ensure that the children were as prepared and calm as possible. Also to Miss Marshall for helping with the administration of the tests and Mrs Fraser for ensuring that all of the procedures were correctly followed and that the right papers were sent to the correct markers- it was a bit of a logistical nightmare but she was an expert by Thursday! Now we just sit back and wait to see how they have done- I hope that they all get the results that they deserve.

Proud:

I am very proud of Matthew Pellow in Year 3. He recently picked daffodils from hedges in his farm and sold them. He raised £160 for St. Luke's Hospice. What an amazing achievement.

Mayfest:

We were very lucky to have a performance by Mike O'Connor and his friend Barbara. They are musicians and storytellers. Mike plays the violin and Barbara, the harp. They are performing at Callington Mayfest and treated us to an hour of Cornish stories and Cornish music. It was such a lovely experience for the children to hear live music. We will be parading our giant - "Feathers' at the parade tomorrow and I look forward to sharing some photographs with you.

Data Reports:

Next week we will be sending out copies of the latest data report for your child/ren. These will detail where your child is working in reading, writing and mathematics and the progress that they have made so far this year.


Unexpected Visitors:

See below for an unexpected visitor after school today. I hope that the person needing the air ambulance gets the help that they needed. They are in our thoughts. We were glad that the Delaware playground could be of use.

We have reached the end of a very busy week, at the end of a very busy term. Thank you to all parents for your support of the various events which have taken place during the last 12 weeks. Today was our dress in blue and yellow to raise funds for Ukraine. The children looked great in their clothing - we even had Tom in Year 5 with blue and yellow hair!
Thanks to your efforts we raised just over £206! This will be sent to the Trust , who are combining the funds raised by all of the other schools and sending the money to the ShelterBox charity. ShelterBox are working on the border of Ukraine- providing support and temporary accommodation to refugees. Let's hope that the combined fundraising helps to buy many kits.
Yesterday pupils from Y3, Y4, Y5 and Y6 worked with two local artists to begin work on the Gunnislake and Delaware 'giant' for Mayfest. This year we are creating a bird - an Emu/Ostrich creation. I will post more photographs when it is completed. We are then going to parade it through the streets Callington during the Mayest celebrations later in the year.
Two of our Year 5 pupils helped to plant a lime leaf tree on Foster's Field today with the help of the Gunnislake Matters Committee. The field is being transferred to the Calstock Local Council and , in the future, they will be responsible for it's upkeep. We look forward to watching it grow so that we and future generations can enjoy it's shade and beauty.
We said a sad goodbye to Frances Bennett today. Frances has been working at both school bases for 13 years. She is a much-loved member of our team and there were lots of tears today as we said goodbye. We wish her the very best in her new home of Reading and hope that she comes back to visit many times.
It only remains for me to thanks the amazing Delaware and Gunnislake team who work so hard for the children- they are all superstars!

It was an exciting time at the Delaware base this week. On Wednesday the Y3 and Y4 pupils took their Tudor houses, which they had painstakingly created, and the local Callington fire brigade set fire to them! This was to replicate the 'Great Fire of London' and proved to be an exciting and memorable event in their learning about the Tudors.It was great as all of the other classes watched too! When the flames were expertly extinguished the fireman gave the children some fire safety advice too. 
Next Friday (8th April) we are asking the pupils to wear blue and yellow to school an bring in a donation to support the people of Ukraine. All monies collected on Friday will be combined with other schools in Bridge Trust and we will be sending the donations to the Shelterbox charity. Please give generously to this very worthy cause.

It has been a couple of busy weeks at school. On Monday 7th we celebrated a belated St. Piran's Day with a range of Cornish themed activities- including, of course, traditional Cornish dancing. On 10th March a group of pupils took part in an Athletics festival at Pensive- we didn't win but the pupils all had a great time taking part.
On Monday 14th March out sports provider, Arena, led a health and wellbeing day which allowed the pupils to try a range of activities, including archery and pilates!
Nine wonderful pupils represented the school on Wednesday 16th March at Cornwall Music Hub's Songfest. at the Plymouth Pavilions. They put on an amazing show, singing a range of fabulous song as part a mass choir of schools in East Cornwall. It was a great evening and out pupils were incredible ambassadors for Delaware and Gunnislake. Thank you to the parents who supported the event and their children.
Friday saw the return of Comic Relief. Pupils gave a donation and dressed in their own clothes or as super heroes. There was also a book and games sale and a t-shirt design competition. (see below for pictures of the winners who will have their designs manufactured.) I will let you know when I have the final total raised.

Even though the children have only been back for 4 days we have crammed lots into this week!
Thursday saw the school invaded by a plethora of famous book characters including Harry Potter, Miss Trunchbull, the BFG with Sophie, Elsa and Anna, a multitude of Disney princesses, several witches, Little Red Riding Hood and Mary Poppins (to name a few.) It was of course World Book Day and I was delighted to see the children dressed up ready to celebrate the wonderful book characters from children's literature. Thank you to parents for the effort you put in sourcing and making these costumes.
I was very fortunate on Friday to accompany the Y5 pupils on their (previously postponed due to storm Eunice) trip to the Military Museum in Bodmin. Not only did we all enjoy a fantastic learning experience, but I received some amazing feedback from the organiser. She told me that our Y5 and, two week's previously, Y6 groups were some of the best behaved and engaged groups who had a visit the attraction! Well done Perranporth and Daymer Bay- I am so proud of you. Thank you also to Mrs Bennett and Miss Johnson for getting both groups safely to and from Bodmin.
Thank you so very much to everyone who sent in donations for Darren Tait to take to Ukraine. It was so moving to see your generosity. Our thoughts go out to all of the families affected by this conflict- both here and in Ukraine.

My name is Hannah and I’m a Casting Junior Researcher at Love Productions; the company behind The Great British Bake Off, The Great British Sewing Bee and The Great Pottery Throw Down.

We are delighted to say, that we have recently opened applications for the 8^th series of Junior Bake Off; a Channel 4 programme that celebrates the culinary talent and ambition of the younger generation in Britain. 

With this in mind, we are contacting schools in the hope that you can help us spread the word regarding this exciting opportunity.
